Tropical Modern Courtyard Villa
Location : Chaloklum, Koh Phangan
Area : 1,000 sq.m.
Architect : Infidia Studio Co.,Ltd
Project Year : 2023
The architectural concept is developed around a central open courtyard that acts as the spatial and climatic heart of the house. This void allows natural light, ventilation, and greenery to penetrate vertically through the building mass, creating a continuous dialogue between interior and landscape.
The building mass is organized in a linear elevated composition, maximizing panoramic sea views while minimizing ground disturbance. The upper volume appears as a light horizontal element floating above the landscape, supported by recessed structural columns to enhance transparency at ground level.
A full-width infinity-edge swimming pool is positioned along the main sea-facing façade, reinforcing the visual connection between water and horizon. The reflective surface of the pool extends the perception of space and blurs the boundary between architecture and ocean.
Materiality follows a restrained tropical palette:
Neutral mineral plaster walls
Vertical wooden screens for solar control
Extensive glazing for visual permeability
Natural stone and timber decks for warmth and texture
Passive design strategies are integrated throughout: deep overhangs, operable screens, cross ventilation, shaded terraces, and roof landscaping. These elements reduce heat gain while maintaining openness.
The spatial experience transitions from grounded entry courtyard → elevated living pavilion → infinity horizon view, creating a gradual unfolding of privacy, light, and openness.
Overall, the design embodies Contemporary Tropical Minimalism — a balance between structure and landscape, solidity and transparency, shelter and openness — resulting in a refined, timeless sea-view residence.
